Argument

In May of 2003 the United States invaded Iraq with the goal of brining Saddam down from power and to build a new government in Iraq. It did not take long for Saddam to be brought down from power. Soon the people of Iraq were celebrating in the street waving a mixture of American and Iraqi flags, many of them cheering “USA”. The scene has changed greatly since the beginning of the war in Iraq. The support for the Iraq war has been on the decline almost since it began. The Iraqis instead of becoming grateful to be able to vote freely without being in fear for their lives are now determined to not let one of the other Muslim religions come into power.

When Saddam was in power there was little fighting between the three primary religions in Iraq. This was not because the three religions got along it were simply because in Saddam’s eyes in any controversy the Sunnis were of coursing right him being a Sunni himself. Saddam had been recorded, of ordering the gassing of an entire village of Kurds, and simply killing anyone who disagreed with him. He continued the reign of terror among his people from 1979 to 2003.

After September eleventh President George Bush said he would begin a campaign against terrorists of the world and those who supported them. So in May of 2003 George Bush decided to go after one of the largest terrorist in the world, Saddam Hussein. When President Bush stated that he was planning on invading Iraq to bring Saddam from power, and to find his weapons of mass destruction, although most approved of the idea there was some controversy because Saddam was not your average terrorists such as Osama Binladin who terrorized other countries. Saddam only terrorized his own people he made his people so fearful of his ruthlessness that they simply were too afraid to vote against him. Although he won his last election with one hundred percent of the votes it was obvious that he was not as nearly supported has it had appeared. Once the United States invaded Iraq for the supposed weapons of mass destruction.

Once we had invaded Iraq without the United Nations support we were unable to find any of the weapons Saddam was reported to have. Although it seemed that many of the citizens had welcomed the American armed forces with open arms. It seemed that the people of Iraq had been very pleased once they figured that we were going to be there until Saddam was no longer in power. There was celebrating in the streets waving of American and Iraqi flags side by side, burning of Saddam portraits, and the bringing down of many symbols of the Saddam reign. At this point the news stations were broadcasting all the celebrating to show how well we were doing in this new conflict to show in a way that the United States did achieve a great thing even though the United Nations disagreed with our initial invasion. Everything seemed to be going well until it was time to vote with the new democracy.

The Shiites who are the majority of the people in Iraq won the election by a significant margin. The Sunnis who had been in power for the last eighty four year became irritated because it did not seem that it was going to be possible for the Sunnis to ever win an election. This began a sort of civil war between the Sunnis and Shiites along with the United States.  This is what many say turned the happy Iraq to a three way disaster zone. The United States is currently still trying to be a sort of police force in Iraq and to keep peace with the citizens. The United States is also helping to train Iraqi police so that they can hopefully someday keep peace for themselves. The Iraqi culture is undergoing many changes in a rather short amount of time there is to be some conflict expected. Our goal is to minimize this conflict and set the Iraqi people on the right path.

David, great job so far. A few recommendations though:

Make sure to place your thesis of the argument at the end of the first paragraph. You need to take a specific position.

Also, especially with your experience of being in the millitary, try to connect some personal examples that deal with this.

Thanks and keep up the great work!
